Big D’s Conch Spot Restaurant

31 12 2009

Reports from Tripadvisor:

This restaurant has really fresh, delicious food. the atmosphere was great for us and our kids, as well as many other groups of people, who all seemed to enjoy themselves just as much as us. The staff was extremly friendly and Big D is fun to chat with. We were on exuma one week and we ate here 4 times. you have to come and experience it for yourself !!!

Great food at a reasonable price. My husband & I each had a conchburger and agreed Big D’s makes the best conchburger on the island. After we finished lunch, we hung out on the beach at Big D’s for awhile – just beautiful!

…and he only had the chicken. I had the conch salad and it was fantastic. (I had been a vegetarian for 9 years up until I arrived at Big D’s.) I lost it and loved it. Another son had cracked conch, and another had grouper. My wife had grouper and we all had a good time. Big D is genuinely a good guy as are all of the people who work or hang out there. The view is lovely. The kids went outside while the food was prepared and gave us a chance to enjoy our Kalik and Bahama Mama in peace. This was in April. We are going back in July (can’t wait) and Big D’s is on the itinerary.

Located approx. 5 minutes drive from Grand Isle Resort and Spa. Great location (right besides the water on the beach)!

Menu is basic but contains enough choices for the seafood lover. Fish and conch a plenty. I ordered the Conch sandwich and found it enjoyable and tender. It was not rubbery like other places where I had conch. This has been the only restaurant so far on Great Exuma that we saw plantains on the menu.

If you sit indoors, there is no AC but screened windows and doors to keep out the insects although there will still be a few flies around. Compared to sitting outside where you may be swarmed as soon as your food arrives.

Fish Fry

George Town Fish Fry

Serious foodies and casual diners alike can find an authentic Bahamian meal at Fish Fry, the tangle of tiny pavilions and shacks located along the shore a few miles outside of George Town. There are no official “hours of operation,” but most of the vendors are open nightly for dinner, with business winding down along with the crowds of locals by around 11 pm. Grab a bite of fresh fish, cracked conch or even pizza, then kick back with a beer or join the locals for a game of dominoes at one of the outdoor picnic tables. Whatever your pleasure, you’re likely to find more than just a tasty meal at the Fish Fry.

February Point Bamboo Bar Reopens

6 11 2009

bamboo-barAfter a short closure period, February Point Resort has reopened the Bamboo Bar and Grill restaurant located at its marina, with a new chef in place and a brand new menu, featuring main course delicacies, such as Pan Roasted Grouper, Cajun Roasted Shrimp, Cedar Planked Scallops and Roasted Organic Chicken Supreme, just to name a few.

The restaurant, which offers its diners a romantic setting with the idyllic view of the marina facility with boats gently bobbing at their berths, is the perfect get-away location for that special dining experience.

Bamboo Grill now features the excellent culinary skills of Executive Chef Forbes, who after graduating from Saint Augustine’s College enrolled at the College of the Bahamas in the National Apprentice Program, where he had the opportunity to be exposed to a full range of culinary courses all of which tended to reinforce and solidify

his intense interest in cooking.

Throughout the apprenticeship, Chef Forbes had the opportunity to study under the tutelage of well known ACF certified chefs and was also granted the opportunity to travel throughout the United States to compete in various ACF competitions representing the Bahamas.

Chef Forbes was the only student at the College at that time that was granted the opportunity to compete in the ACF Southeast Regional Competition two years in a row, the second time as the team captain and bringing home medals both times. He has had the opportunity to meet and work with chefs from all over the world, including

the current American Culinary Federation President John Kinsella. Previously employed by the prestigious

Lyford Cay Club in Nassau in the capacity of Sous Chef at the world famous Yacht Club Restaurant, he continued to hone his culinary skills and develop further as a Chef.

After some time in Nassau he then decided to return to Exuma where the opportunity presented itself to express

his culinary passion as the Executive Chef at the Bamboo Bar and Grill at February Point Resort.

Bamboo Bar and Grill is open to the public every night except Tuesday starting at 5 pm. There are specials throughout the week including happy-hour, live music, and of course the most spectacular setting on Great Exuma.
